on thanksgiving day we had a beautiful little visitor while our dinner was in the oven; a tiny male kinglet hovered outside the living room window, swooping and darting and flashing his red cap whenever he got really excited. the theory is that this happened whenever he spied his reflection in the window, reacting to what he thought was another male kinglet when it was really just him. or maybe he was trying to tell us something.
Later that afternoon in the warmth of the kitchen another visitor; this time a slow moving beetle with a long nose. I scooped him up and put him outside.
another visitor is still here this morning though I have tried various methods to catch and release him from grandma's room. he is adorably small and fast and has been feasting on the peanut butter that I have smeared on the first traps that I tried. the latest i found online while googling "have a heart" traps; a cardboard ramp, a cardboard tube smeared with peanut butter and balanced precariously atop a trashcan. when he finally falls in we'll take a sunday drive a mile from here and the little brown mouse will have a new home, maybe at a nearby farm.
